In addition to Polytechnics, Private Universities, State-owned and Federal-owned universities, Nigeria also has more than 60 Colleges of Education.

Nigeria organised into 36 states and a federal capital territory (FCT) in Abuja, expanded its tertiary education to reach all of its subregions, following the oil boom years of the 1970s. The Colleges of Education in Nigeria are owned and funded by either the federal government, the state governments or private bodies and organizations.

The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) is the accreditation body that enforces uniform standards and sets admissions capacity of every College of Education in Nigeria. In pursuit of its mandate, the commission standardized and continuously reviews the curriculum of the Colleges of Education. This constant review of the curriculum had strengthened the capacity of Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) graduates.

After the laying down of minimum requirements for the Colleges of Education, the Commission had gone ahead to accredit their courses. The accreditation of the courses is carried out once in five years.

The official lingua fraca in Nigeria, which is also the language of instruction at all levels of education from kindergarten to phD level, is the English Language.
