Scholarship Description
Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarships is for students of various levels as awarded by several schools and Institutions in the United States.
To honor the legacy of one of the greatest men and civil rights activist that ever walked the face of the earth, several institutions offer scholarships to students who genuinely believe in and acknowledge the values for which this great man believed in and lived his life for.
Colleges, universities, boards and other institutions have continued to honor this great man.

1). Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarships at Canisius College
Social Justice is an integral part of Canisius College and our Jesuit heritage, which is grounded in the philosophy of “men and women for others.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was at the forefront of social justice in America and we honor his life and his dedication to peace and equality through the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program.Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the scholarship; applicants will be evaluated on their personal achievements, their involvement in community service and their commitment to the ideals of Dr. King. Scholarship recipients will be awarded $1,000 each, renewable for four years with a minimum 2.25 grade point average while at Canisius and participation in COPE office programming as described on the back of the application.
The scholarship deadline is Monday, January 17, 2011 – the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students are encouraged to apply for admission to Canisius by January 7, 2011. Only first-time students admitted to Canisius prior to the scholarship application deadline will be considered for the scholarship.

2). Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship at Boston University
To honor the legacy of one of our greatest alumni, we recognize students who embrace his ideals. In 1951, Dr. King came to Boston University to earn his PhD in systematic theology. Today the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship provides four-year, full-tuition awards for academically gifted students with proven leadership abilities, a strong commitment to social justice and a record of community involvement.Scholarship winners continue their commitment to service at Boston University. All are required to complete a minimum of 100 community service hours each year in conjunction with BU’s Howard Thurman Center, the hub of multicultural life on campus. The center supports student organizations, sponsors events and promotes ongoing conversations about the common ground shared by all. In addition, recipients have the opportunity to live in the Common Ground House, one of BU’s specialty residences.

3). The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program at Ithaca College
What distinguishes the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program from other scholarship opportunities? 4). Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Scholarship
A $500 scholarship will be presented from the East Ohio Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry of East Ohio Conference. Any high school senior who is an active member in a United Methodist Church inside the boundaries of the East Ohio Conference is eligible to apply.Applicants will be asked to write a story, essay, poem, etc. of 1,500 words or less on the following theme: "How is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream Kept Alive for You Today?" Entries will be judged on basis of creativity, content, originality, clarity, punctuation/grammar, and the author's awareness of Civil Rights issues.
