Scholarship Description
The Hongkong Bank Foundation offers the HSBC Overseas Scholarship to local full-time undergraduate students to spend some time at one of many overseas universities.
The HSBC Overseas Scholarships enable recipients to spend one year of their degree programme at one of several designated overseas universities and return back to their local University to complete their studies and graduate. The local University will nominate eligible candidates to compete with students from other universities in Hong Kong for the Scholarships.

Eligibility
The HSBC Overseas Scholarship is open to HKU non-final year full-time undergraduate students who meet the following requirements:
1. Hong Kong permanent residents with the right of abode in Hong Kong.
2. GPA of 3.7 or above / top 3% of class in the first semester of the academic year 2016-17. Non-first year students should also have achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.7 / top 3% class ranking in the academic year 2015-16. For first year students, please submit your HKDSE results proof or equivalent qualifications.
3. Well-rounded, participating in extra-curricular and community service activities.
4. No extensive experience of living or studying overseas.
5. Priority will be given to applicants who are in a financial situation which does not permit overseas study or extensive travel overseas;
6. Commitment to Hong Kong.
7. A minimum total TOEFL score of 90 (Internet-based test) with scores for individual sections not lower than 22 on listening, 17 on writing, 21 on reading, and 21 on speaking; or a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5, with no component below 6.0. These are irrespective of the requirements of the intended overseas universities.

To enable students to have more exposure in their fields of study, applicants will have the flexibility to major in different disciplines other than the one the applicant is currently studying, while abroad. The majoring discipline, however, will have to be listed in the approved disciplines list by HSBC as below:
All disciplines under architecture, business and economics, communication, computer science/information systems, construction and land use, dentistry, design, education, engineering, health care, hotel and tourism, law, medicine, science (basic and applied), social sciences, textiles, and arts subjects (linguistics and languages, translation, history, geography, fine arts and applied arts) and environment.

Scholarship benefits
The Scholarship will cover: tuition fee of the overseas institution; a minimum economy return airfare; and reasonable room and board costs, books, a small portion of living expenses and visa application fees; up to a maximum amount of HKD300,000.
However, the scholarship amount does not cover insurance, personal expenses and other incidentals. The final amount of scholarship to be awarded to each scholar shall be subject to approval by HSBC.
Method of Application
Applicants should obtain and send completed Scholarship Application Forms together with copies of all relevant supporting documents to the Office of Student Affairs, or Office of International Student Exchange, or equivalent offices in their home university for consideration and nomination. Selection for this scholarship is by open application and interview.
Applicants will need to apply to the overseas universities directly for admission. You are strongly recommended to do so as soon as possible. Please check carefully relevant application deadlines of the overseas universities. The HSBC Scholarships will not be offered to students who fail to gain admission to the overseas universities
Recipients of the Scholarship will also need to apply for leave of absence with their faculties AFTER they are formally accepted by the overseas university.

The Hongkong Bank Foundation charitable trust was founded in 1981 by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) to co-ordinate its community support programmes in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR). Since 1997, the Foundation has contributed in scholarships, bursaries and other development awards to students from tertiary institutions in Hong Kong covering a wide range of scholarships such as scholarships for local, mainland and international students, for overseas exchange, for students with disabilities etc. It has also been donating to programmes that benefit mainland China.
