Scholarship Description
Every year, the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) and the United Nations University Institute of (UNU-ISP) offer PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships to young scholars and policy-makers, especially from the developing world.
These Fellowships provide a multidisciplinary context within which to pursue advanced research and training that are of professional interest to the successful applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of their selected UNU-IAS or UNU-ISP programme.
Applications will be invited for the following three fellowship types: UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship; UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship; and JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the different fellowship types are:
- UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship
- Applicants must be at an advanced dissertation writing stage of the PhD with their research proposal accepted by the candidate's university.
- Proficiency in English is essential.
- UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Applicants must have gained their PhD degree.
- Proficiency in English is essential.
- JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Applicants must have gained their PhD degree on or after 2 April 2007 for the 2013 Fellowships.
- Proficiency in English is essential.
- Nationality: Citizens of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. (Japanese nationals who do not have citizenship or permanent residency of another country are not eligible.)

UNU-IAS in Yokohama; UNU-IAS OUIK in Kanazawa; or UNU-ISP in Tokyo.
Residences for the different fellowship types are as follows:
- UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship - UNU-IAS, Yokohama or Kanazawa, Japan
- UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship - UNU-IAS, Yokohama or Kanazawa, Japan
- JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship - UNU-IAS, Yokohama, Japan or UNU-ISP, Tokyo, Japan
Any field of direct relevance to the research agenda.
Residency at the participating institutions gives the PhD and Postdoctoral Fellows the opportunity to gain from the broader research programme of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences arranged by UNU-IAS and UNU-ISP.

Sponsorship duration
The full term of the fellowships, which are as follows:
- UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship - 12 months
- UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship - 12 months (possiblity of renewal for another 12 months)
- JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship - 24 months
A). UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship - The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY260,000 from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted.
B). UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship - The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY300,000- 360,000 (depending on experience) from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted.
C). JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship - A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations), A monthly maintenance allowance of JPY362,000, and A settling-in allowance of JPY200,000, Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage, etc.
Please note:
For A) and B) above, a one-time-only settle-in-allowance of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each Fellow at the beginning of the programme for relocation, adjustment expenses, ground transportation and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides Fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport. Settle-in-allowance and air tickets are, however, not provided for Fellows already residing in Japan before the commencement of the fellowship.

DEADLINES:
The UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship, UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowship, and JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programmes begins on 1 September and the selected Fellows are required to be in Japan by this date.
Information on the 2013 JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships and UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships will be posted here in December 2012. The deadline for applications for the 2013 Fellowships is 28 February 2013.
PLEASE NOTE:
Review of applications by the Fellowship Committee will begin immediately after the application deadline. Short-listed candidates will be contacted for a telephone interview and request of reference letters. The final result for the 2013 fellowships will be announced in May 2013.
