Scholarship Description
The Boomer Esiason Foundation (BEF) created a scholar-athlete award, the Exercise for Life Athletic Scholarship Program, to assist cystic fibrosis (CF) high school senior athletes pursuing undergraduate degrees.

The goal of the Exercise for Life Athletic Scholarship is to improve the quality of life and increase the lifespan of individuals with CF through the power of daily physical exercise (jogging). As therapeutic developments increase the lifespan of CF patients, so does the need for further education in the area of exercise.

Doctors and Cystic Fibrosis (CF) centers have made it clear: when it comes to CF, exercise saves lives. So, if you're eligible for the Exercise for Life Athletic Scholarship Program, we encourage you to apply straight away.

Eligibility
Applicants must be a high school senior or undergraduate student who has cystic fibrosis and demonstrates scholastic ability, athletic ability (as evidenced by regular exercise), character, leadership, service to the community, need for financial assistance, and daily compliance to CF therapy.

The student-athlete should jog on a regular basis and be training for the 1.5-mile qualifying run. All candidates will be judged on the basis of time.

Selection criteria:
BEF’s Exercise for Life Scholarship will be awarded to high school seniors and undergraduate students on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic accomplishment and athletic ability in the area of running.

Approved high schools and academic institutions in the United States

Fields of study
All areas of study are eligible

Number of awards
Four (4) awards - to one female and one male high school student, and one female and one male undergraduate student

Sponsorship duration
Scholarships will be awarded annually on the basis of the selection criteria outlined above.

Scholarship benefits
BEF will grant:
  • one male and one female high school student $10,000.
  • one male and one female undergraduate student $10,000.
*Grants are made directly to the academic institution to assist in covering the cost of tuition and fees.

Method of Application
Applicants are required to provide ALL of the following documents in order to be considered:
  1. Application
  2. Completed Exercise For Life training log (DOWNLOAD HERE)
  3. Essay (1. Discuss the importance of compliance to CF therapies and what you practice daily to stay healthy; 2.Discuss your post-graduation goals.)
  4. Recent photo
  5. Letter from physician (on letterhead) confirming CF diagnosis and therapy routine
  6. Most recent W2 form for both parents
  7. Transcript (high school, college and/or graduation school)
  8. Detailed breakdown of tuition costs from academic institution
  9. Signed online waiver

PLEASE NOTE:
The experience of living with cystic fibrosis is markedly different today than it was decades ago. Thanks to the discovery of the CF gene, the availability of effective drug therapies and advances in technology, the 30,000 Americans who deal with the disease day in and day out are living longer and fuller lives. In a word, they are thriving.

The Boomer Esiason Foundation are a group of passionate, dedicated individuals who work every day to raise money, awareness, and support for the cystic fibrosis community.
