Scholarship Description
The Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education & Research for Development (APPEAR) invites students and professionals from eligible countries to apply to the Master's and PhD programme of Appear. Their studies are expected to be in line with the development priorities of their home countries and the thematic focus of the programme.

APPEAR wants to encourage researchers, professionals and academic institutions in the addressed countries and in Austria to share their knowledge and experiences, to design innovative projects targeting the general objective described and to improve the overall standards in higher education, research and management.

The objective of APPEAR programmes is to contribute to institutional capacity development and poverty reduction in their home countries by completing their specific Master’s or PhD studies or parts thereof at an Austrian university. The studies enable them to contribute to the improvement of higher education and research in their home countries and institutions.

Eligibility
The age limits for applicants take the specific needs and living conditions of women in the South into account:
  • Master's: not older than 30 years (for women not older than 35)
  • PhD: not older than 35 years (for women not older than 40)
Eligible groups
Citizens of the following countries:
  • Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya
  • Mozambique
  • Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Senegal
  • Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala
  • Bhutan, Nepal
  • Palestinian Territories
Participating Institutions
Partner institutions in the South (from the countries above), and participants of Master's and PhD programmes at Austrian universities

Fields of study
All proposed activities are expected to be related to the thematic focus of APPEAR:
  • Higher education and research for development
  • Water supply and sanitation, rural development, energy, private sector development, governance and human rights
  • Poverty reduction, environment and natural resources, peace building and conflict prevention, gender equality
  • Strengthening of skills in social sciences as an instrument to systematically analyze the reasons of poverty and to empower capacities in social science research

Sponsorship duration
Generally your scholarship letter will be issued for 12 months. In order to extend your scholarship you will have to submit the application for extension of your scholarship to the OeAD Regional Office. In addition your scientific supervisor is requested to send his/her assessement about the progress of your studies.

Scholarship benefits
APPEAR awards the Preparatory funding and Master's and PhD grants. Financed costs for Masters and PhD grants:
  • Master’s studies: EUR 960,- per month (average 24 months)
  • PhD studies: EUR 1.050,- per month (average 36 months)
  • Travel costs (including field studies in the home country) and additional grants (e.g. German courses, participation in conferences, printing costs)

The objective of the Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education & Research for Development (APPEAR) is to strengthen institutional capacities in higher education, research and management in the key regions of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) through academic partnerships with Austrian academic institutions and Master's and PhD Programmes as a contribution to sustainable reduction of poverty.
