Scholarship Description
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – the voice of the environment within the United Nations – launched a new competition, the Young Environmental Journalist Award Africa (YEJA), with funding support from the Government of the United States of America, to encourage inspiring reporting on the environment by young journalists in Africa.

Following the successful launch of the competition last year, the United Nations Environment Programme is pleased to announce the 2011 UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award.

The Young Environmental Journalist Award Africa seeks to recognise the very best in original, accurate and inspiring reporting on the environment by young journalists in Africa. A jury of journalists and environmental experts will select the winning entry.

Eligibility
Competition rules:
  1. Entries are limited to African journalists, between 21 and 35 years old, who are based in Africa and working for local, regional or international media organizations. Freelance journalists are also welcome to apply
  2. Print, online, radio and television journalists from any African country may apply
  3. Reports submitted to the competition must have been published or broadcast during the 2011 calendar year (1 January – 31 December 2011)
  4. Entrants will submit one story only. This can be a news or features story from a newspaper, magazine or news website, a television report or radio report on an environmental theme
  5. Written articles should not exceed 3000 words
  6. Radio or television reports should be no longer than 6 minutes
  7. Posts from personal blogs will not be accepted
  8. Public relations material or articles of a promotional nature will not be accepted
  9. The YEJA administrators and jury are the final authorities for determining whether an entry is eligible
  10. All entries must be accompanied by a completed application form
  11. Entries (both online and postal) must be received by 5pm (Nairobi time) on 16 December 2011. Entries received after this date will be disqualified. There are no entry fees
  12. Articles and reports should be submitted in English or French only
  13. Electronic files uploaded with applications must conform to the specifications outlined in the application form
  14. In submitting an entry, the entrant accepts that he or she has read, understood and accepted the competition rules
  15. Entrants should keep copies of all material submitted
  16. UNEP reserves the right to reproduce entries for use in promotional materials and campaigns
  17. UNEP does not charge entry fees – or any other fees – in relation to the award
Selection criteria:
Among other criteria, judges for the 2011 UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award will assess entries on the strength of their environmental component, newsworthiness, originality, scientific accuracy, and relevance to local or regional communities in Africa.

Scholarship benefits
The winner will be presented with his/her prize during the 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) to be held in February 2012.

The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the USA, where he or she will follow a unique, “green” itinerary. The winner will travel across the country, interacting with environmental projects, leading environmental journalists, scientists and public figures.
