Scholarship Description
The Thuthuka Bursary Fund is administered by The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

It aims to assist academically-talented African and Coloured students to pursue a BCom Accounting degree in order to become chartered accountants.

The Bursary Fund places students at various participating universities.

Eligibility
Do you qualify? Answer these questions to see if you do:

• Do you have 60% in Mathematics in your Grade 11 Final Results (Level 5)?
• Do you have enough points to qualify for university entrance?
• Do you come from a family that cannot support you financially at tertiary?
• Are you an African or Coloured learner?

If you answered YES to all the questions above, then you qualify.

The Process of Awarding a Bursary:

• The application must have met the above criteria
• The learner must have applied or be in the process of applying to one of the following tertiary institutions (see below)
• Once the learner has met the above criteria they will be called in for testing
• Depending on the test results then the learner may be called in for an interview.

Once the learner has met all the above requirements and gone through the relevant test and interview only then will the bursary be provisionally awarded to the learner pending the final Grade 12 results.

Eligible groups
The Thuthuka Bursary Fund is looking for academically strong learners who aspire to become Chartered Accountants. Students who do exceptionally well in Mathematics and have excellent marks in the other subject to qualify for university entrance may apply.

The accredited universities that are part of the programme are:

• University of Johannesburg
• University of Cape Town (Bachelor of Commerce code CB011)
• Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
• Stellenbosch University
• University of Pretoria
• University of Orange Free State
• University of Witwatersrand (WITS)

Please note these:
Apply to at least 2 universities.

One of these universities must be the closest to your home.

Thutuka bursaries are only awarded to students who are accepted at these universities.

Fields of study
Undergraduate BCom Accounting education programmes.

Please note that students who do exceptionally well in most subjects yet obtain poor results in Mathematics do not qualify. Good results in Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy) are key in pursuing a career in Chartered Accountancy.

Number of awards
250 - 300 are given each year

Scholarship benefits
The purpose of the project is to annually place between 250 - 300 fully bursared Black African and Coloured students at selected SAICA-accredited universities in cohorts of 50 per university on special undergraduate BCom Accounting education programmes.
