Scholarship Description
The Department of Oncology offers both MSc and PhD thesis-based degrees in two areas of specialization: Experimental Oncology, and Medical Physics, as well as a General Program. These research-oriented programs provide the tools to successfully design, implement and analyze experiments, and build students’ writing skills for publications and grants.

There are many research-related awards, scholarships and bursaries available to students and trainees in the Department of Oncology.

Academically accomplished domestic and international students are invited to apply for funded positions in the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs of the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta, an institution that ranks among the top 100 in the world.

Eligibility
Candidate Requirements:.
The Oncology program welcomes academically accomplished domestic and international students with a baccalaureate degree (or its academic equivalent) and an appropriate research background. Specific requirements regarding English Language Proficiency, GRE scores, and minimum GPA, can be found on our website.

Participating Institutions
Research Environment: The Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta is located within the Cross Cancer Institute, the major cancer treatment centre in Central/Northern Alberta, Canada.

Fields of study
Thesis-based M.Sc. and Ph.D. research topics include but are not limited to:

• genetic and epigenetic control of nuclear organization
• regulatory mechanisms in neural development, retinoblastoma and brain tumours
• metabolism of cachexia and wasting diseases
• mechanisms of cell-cycle control
• molecular events in ovarian cancer
• novel gene therapeutics
• nutrient-gene interactions in cancer
• tumor imaging and positron emission tomography
• molecular basis of DNA-repair
• molecular events in multiple myeloma
• computer based modeling and drug discovery
• molecular mechanisms of melanoma pathogenesis

The Medical Physics Program, accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), prepares students for a career as a Medical Physicist in North America.

Scholarship benefits
Funding and Awards: In 2011-12, graduate students will be funded to a minimum level of $25,000 – $27,000 CAD. Support comes from sources such as:

• departmental/university scholarships
• competitive provincial and national awards
• tuition scholarships
• travel and conference awards
• supervisor-funded stipends.

Exceptional new candidates are also be eligible for recruitment awards including:

• Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships: prestigious national award valued at $50,000 CAD/year
• Cathy & Harold Roozen Endowment Entrance Award
• Antoine Noujaim Graduate Entrance Scholarship

Method of Application
Admission as a graduate student to the Department of Oncology is only granted once a supervisor has been identified and committed to providing funding if external funding is not obtained.

Medical Physics graduate students are not required to identify a supervisor before they begin their program. Selection of a supervisor is typically done by May of the student's first year (after completing the required course work and selecting a research focus).
