Scholarship Description
The University of Canterbury, through the Henry Alabaster Endowment fund, offers the Alabaster Scholarship for International students who want to pursue undergraduate studies in classical literature. At the discretion of the Scholarship council, a postgraduate offer may be made too.

Two Charles and Austin Henry Alabaster Scholarships, tenable for one year, shall be offered for competition every year to students in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses. The scholarships are offered annually to matriculated students of the University of Canterbury.

The University of Canterbury offers over $20 million in scholarships and prizes annually to help fund our students' study. The Alabaster Scholarship was bequested by Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq, to the University of Canterbury in memory of his father, the Reverend Charles Alabaster.

University of Canterbury Alabaster Scholarships

Eligibility
The scholarships shall be open to any matriculated and undergraduate student of the university; under special conditions, however, at the discretion of the Academic Board, a scholarship may be awarded to a graduate.

The scholarships shall not be held concurrently with a University Senior Scholarship.

Candidates for the scholarships shall be assessed for linguistic ability in their end-of-year examinations and shall submit an essay within three weeks after the examinations. Candidates may offer either Latin or Greek or both; but a general knowledge of both Greek and Roman history and literature will be required.

The holder of a scholarship shall pursue a course of study which meets with the approval of the Academic Board.

Selection criteria:
Election to the scholarships shall be made by the University Council after considering the recommendation of the Academic Board.

Eligible subjects are Classics (classical literature, Greek and Latin) AND History

Number of awards
Two (2) scholarships are offered annually to undergraduate students or, under special conditions, a scholarship may be offered to a graduate

Sponsorship duration
Award tenure is for one (1) year. The tenure of a scholarship may be terminated at any time by the Council, if it receives from the Academic Board an unfavorable report on the conduct or progress of a scholar.

Scholarship benefits
The current value of the scholarships is $2,250 per annum.

Method of Application
The Alabaster scholarships require that you have been offered ‘admission’ into the university of Canterbury. You would need to fill in a scholarship Application Form; but, note that application forms are usually available approximately 8 weeks ahead of the closing date (sometimes earlier than this). A link to apply on-line for this scholarship may be displayed on the official website for you to use; however, if no link is provided to the on-line application system, please download and complete the application form located on the official site. Ensure that you meet any eligibility restrictions and only apply if you definitely match the eligibility criteria.

DEADLINES:
Applications should be made to the Registrar no later than 5.00 p.m. on 1 October of any year.

PLEASE NOTE:
Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq, who died in 1920, bequested to the University of Canterbury an endowment for scholarships in classical literature in memory of his father, the Reverend Charles Alabaster.
If in any year should there be no candidates of sufficient merit, the surplus funds shall, after consideration of a report from the Academic Board, be applied by the Council in the best interests of the scholarship.

Candidates for the scholarships will be required to sit a written examination and submit an essay.

The University of Canterbury in Christchurch is New Zealand's second oldest university. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Its original campus was in the central city, but in 1961 when it became an independent university it also began moving out of its original neo-gothic buildings, which were re-purposed as the Christchurch Arts Centre.
