Scholarship Description
Various categories of funding provide support towards the cost of study at University of Cape Town (UCT) for students who will register for Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees. The UCT offers a limited number of scholarships, available to non-South African graduates who are residents of countries other than South Africa.
All UCT International and Refugee Students' Scholarships are supplementary. Students who apply must have the means to fund their studies. The scholarships are renewable for the duration of the course of study, if satisfactory progress is maintained, for one year at honours level, two at master's level and three at doctoral level.
Applications are invited for the International and Refugee Students’ Scholarships from full time Honours, Masters and Doctoral Students.
Eligibility
Funding is available for refugees in South Africa. The Scholarships awarded on a yearly basis. The country of origin is irrelevant, but proof of Refugee status is required.
Funding is available for postgraduate studies only. The bursaries are awarded on a yearly basis. The country of origin is irrelevant.
The International & Refugee Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis with emphasis given to academic merit and to the seniority of candidates.
Also note:
To qualify for postgraduate funding, intending postgraduate students must first formally apply for an academic place at UCT. Only students registering for Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees are eligible.
Students who register for postgraduate diplomas and certificates, the BArch, the LLB, or for the Undergraduate 4th year of any Bachelors degree are not eligible for UCT's postgraduate awards, and are referred to the Student Financial Aid Office. Students who intend to study for a second degree at the same level as one they already hold, (e.g., a second Honours degree) are also not eligible for funding.
It is important to note that the University is not able to provide full-cost funding to postgraduate students. Scholarships and bursaries awarded will contribute towards the cost of study and applicants are advised to secure additional support.

Scholarship duration
The scholarships are renewable for the duration of the course of study subject to satisfactory progress being maintained, up to a limit of 1 year at Honours level; for the 1st and 2nd years of Master’s study, and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of Doctoral study.
Scholarship benefits
The value for Honours is R20 000; for Master’s is R25 000; and for Doctoral is R30 000. The scholarships do not provide full-cost support. All UCT International and Refugee Students Scholarships are supplementary. Applying students must ensure that they have sufficient support for their studies.
Method of Application
Applications for funding cannot be processed unless applicants first apply for full-time admission through the UCT Admissions Office or the Faculty Office. Applicants can download the International Students Scholarship application form (Form 10C) from the official website.
Also note: Students who are eligible for renewals of awards made, may apply for such renewals by completing (Form 10F), which can also be downloaded from the official website.
