Scholarship Description
The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, through conferences and residency programs, supports the work of scholars, artists, thought leaders, policymakers and practitioners who share in the Foundation’s pioneering mission to “promote the well-being of humanity.”
Through grantmaking, The Rockefeller Foundation works to spread the benefits of globalization to more people in more places around the world.
Established in 2008, the Bellagio Creative Arts Fellows Program seeks to raise the international visibility of some of the most interesting contemporary visual artists and their innovative work.
The Bellagio Center has a record of major impact, from meetings that led to the Green Revolution and the Global AIDS vaccine initiative, to residencies that furthered Michael Ondaatje’s work on The English Patient, Bill T. Jones’ choreography and the work of Glenn Ligon.
This legacy, the serene work environment on the shore of Lake Como in northern Italy, the diverse groups of people, and the promise of future achievements make Bellagio an inspiring and productive forum for fostering positive change.

If you would like The Rockefeller Foundation to consider funding your project, you are welcome to submit an inquiry, but please keep in mind the following:
- The only way in which we receive unsolicited funding inquiries is through our online inquiry process.
- We are a proactive grantmaking organization.
- Incoming requests must clearly fit within the Foundation's funding strategy.
- Accordingly, there are three factors the Foundation takes into consideration when evaluating a project.
- Does your project fit within one of the Foundation's initiatives?
- Does your request clearly address one or more of our core issue areas?
- Does your work affect people in one or more of the geographic areas in which the Foundation works?
- If you feel your work relates to our funding strategy and you have met the criteria described above, please submit your inquiry through our online portal.
Decisions for conferences are based on:
- the relevance of the project to the Foundation’s focus areas and/or to the Foundation’s goals of building resilience and equitable growth for the world’s poor or vulnerable people.
- the conference framework and the feasibility of the proposed outcomes
- the potential for impact in the relevant field and/or on the lives of poor or vulnerable people
- the diversity of participants and perspectives [note: all participants cannot come from the same organization]
- the qualifications of the conference organizer(s), and
- the suitability of the Bellagio Center for the proposed convening. [note: Bellagio meetings are small, interactive workshops, typically of less than 23 people]
The Bellagio Creative Arts Fellows high profile program awards fellowships to visual artists who have demonstrated exceptional originality, work that is inspired by or related to global social issues, and who share in the Foundation's mission of promoting the well-being of humankind. The Creative Arts Fellows are nominated by an international selection committee of leading arts professionals.
RESIDENCY PROGRAMS:
The Residency Program offers scholars, artists, thought leaders, writers, musicians, scientists, policymakers, development professionals and practitioners from around the world a serene setting conducive to goal-oriented work as well as opportunities for establishing new connections with fellow residents and other professionals from around the world.
The following residency programs can be applied for:
- Academic Writing Residency: Researchers in the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and other academic disciplines
- Arts & Literary Arts Residency: Artists, composers, fiction and non-fiction writers
- Practitioner Residency: Policymakers, nonprofit leaders, journalists, and public advocates

Grants:
Grant amounts range from under $100,000 to $100,000 - $500,000 and on to $500,000 - $1,000,000 and finally, may be up to $1,000,000 + Up.
Conferences:
The Conference Program provides space for exchanging ideas across disciplines and geographies, engaging in focused small group interactions, and pushing creative and innovative thinking to address global challenges.
Residency:
The Bellagio Resident Fellows program offers a serene setting conducive to focused, goal-oriented work, and the unparalleled opportunity to establish new connections with fellow residents from a stimulating array of disciplines and geographies. It is a highly competitive program to which applicants can apply to work on a project of their own choosing for a period of four weeks.
The combination of uninterrupted, individual time during the day and evenings spent with innovative leaders, writers, and artists from a wide array of fields advances fellows’ current projects and stimulates creative approaches to future work.
This community generates new knowledge to solve some of the most complex issues facing our world and creates art that inspires reflection, understanding, and imagination.
Bellagio Creative Arts Fellows:
The Fellows are given a cash award and are invited for a residency for two months to work on a project.

For Grants:
The Foundation asks that you not send proposals or letters of inquiry by mail or email unless requested to do so by a Foundation staff member. If your inquiry is related to a conference or The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center please use the Bellagio application process.

For Conferences:
Applications are reviewed by the senior program leadership of the Rockefeller Foundation, who make the final selection. To get a sense of the Foundation’s perspective on convening, you may want to review “Gather," a guidebook to effective convening.
For the Fellowships:
Each year, an advisory panel of leading international curators and artists identifies nominees from all over the world based on the artist's past work, creativity, and innovation. Nominations are invited each year, and the advisory panel shortlist candidates for final consideration by the senior leadership of the Rockefeller Foundation.
For the Residency Program:
Applying for an Academic Writing Residency - Individuals based at a university or a think thank in any discipline and from any part of the world are welcome to apply. To ensure an intellectually diverse and stimulating environment, the program welcomes projects from all academic disciplines.
Applying for an Arts & Literary Arts Residency - Artists of significant achievement from any country are welcome to apply.
Applying for a Practitioner Residency - The Foundation seeks practitioner applicants with demonstrated leadership qualities and the capacity to contribute to the intellectual life at the Center.

The Rockefeller Foundation is a philanthropic organization and private foundation based at 420 Fifth Avenue, New York City. The preeminent institution established by the six-generation Rockefeller family, it was founded by John D. Rockefeller ("Senior"), along with his son John D. Rockefeller, Jr. ("Junior"), and Senior's principal business and philanthropic advisor, Frederick Taylor Gates, in New York State May 14, 1913, when its charter was formally accepted by the New York State Legislature. Its central historical mission is "to promote the well-being of mankind throughout the world."
The Rockefeller Foundation owns and operates the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Bellagio, Italy. The Center comprises several buildings, spread across a 50-acre (200,000 m2) property, on the peninsula between lakes Como and Lecco in Northern Italy. The Center is sometimes colloquially referred to as the Villa Serbelloni.
The Villa is only one of the many buildings in which residents and conference participants are housed. The property was bequeathed to the Foundation in 1959 under the presidency of Dean Rusk (who was later to become U.S. President Kennedy's secretary of state).
The Bellagio Center operates both a conference center and a residency program.
