Canada is building world-class research capacity by recruiting top-tier postdoctoral researchers at an internationally competitive level of funding and positioning them for success as the research leaders of tomorrow.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research‑based growth.

These prestigious two-year fellowships, worth $70,000 per year, are open to both Canadian and international researchers who have recently completed a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program in Canada

Eligibility
Applicant eligibility:
a). Citizenship and location of host institution:
Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to apply with the following stipulations:
  • applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution,
  • applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a foreign university may only hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at a Canadian institution, and
  • applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and who obtained their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree from a Canadian university may hold their Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at either a Canadian institution or an institution outside of Canada.

The Banting PDF program previously had a limit of 25% on the number of awards granted to postdoctoral trainees for tenure abroad. This limit has been removed, effective from the 2017-2018 competition.

b). Eligibility window for degree completion:
Applicants to the 2018-19 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree:
  • between September 15, 2015 and September 30, 2019 (inclusively), and
  • before the start date of their award.
Applicants who have not fulfilled all requirements for their degree at the time of application must submit proof no later than October 15, 2019.

Postdoctoral level research studies in the fields of health, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities

Number of study
70 fellowships are awarded annually (as more funds become available, additional fellowships may be awarded.). However, a total of up to 140 awards are active at any time. Fellowships are distributed equally among:
  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  • Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Sponsorship duration
The duration is 2 years (non‑renewable)

The value of the fellowships is $70,000 per year (taxable)

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to: (a). attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally; (b). develop their leadership potential; AND (c). position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow.

Method of Application
Before beginning an application please read the Application guide carefully. Individual application documents can be submitted in either English or French. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete, including all host institution documents and referee assessments. An application is completed through completing the tasks listed on the official website.

Deadline for complete application submission is September 19, 2018 (20:00 EDT)

PLEASE NOTE:
An applicant to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must complete their application in full collaboration with the proposed host institution.

Applicants should seek endorsement from host institution to apply, prepare and submit application (institutions may have internal deadlines) between April – September. Evaluation of applications will take place between October - December 2018.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is one of a suite of elite federal research capacity development programs. The suite begins with early graduate student support through Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, progresses to postdoctoral training through the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program and continues through the academic career progression (Tier 1 and 2 Canada Research Chairs) to a career pinnacle with the Canada Excellence Research Chairs, and announced in 2014, the Canada First Research Excellence Fund.
