Scholarship Description
This PhD scholarship programme is directed at applicants in Tanzania intending to pursue research on agribusiness and energy in Tanzania. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships. The program is using the sandwich model and is carried out with collaborating universities in Sweden.
One important task of the University of Dar es Salaam Business School is to conduct research on topical economic and business issues. The research in Agribusiness is one of very pertinent research agenda of the School. The research is carried out by senior researchers in collaboration with Masters and PhD students. This scholarship programme will provide opportunities for its participants to pursue their own research projects leading to a PhD degree.
Eligibility
Applicants should be Tanzanians and must have a good Masters degree. Priority is given to UDSM academic staff and academic staff from any other public institutions
The Programme is directed at young researchers intending to pursue research in agribusiness and energy in Tanzania. The school would especially like to encourage women to apply for these scholarships.

Participating Institutions
University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS), University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) main campus, Tanzania.
Collaborating Swedish universities include: University of Umea, Chalmers University of Technology, and University of Gothenburg.
Fields of study
Applications are invited from persons preferably with research projects related to the following areas:
- Agribusiness Value Chain
- Agricultural Development
- Agribusiness Resources including finance, management, networks,etc
- Globalization, Trade and Growth in Agribusiness
- Energy services and products in Agribusiness: A value chain perspective
- Rural Dynamics including group dynamics
- Renewable energy
- Biofuels

Sponsorship duration
Duration is three (3) years, starting 2011. The maximum duration of the stay in Sweden is 3 months each year.
Scholarship benefits
The scholarship includes a return air-fare (Economy Class) to Swedish Universities each year, accommodation, and subsistence allowance while in Sweden for 3 months each year, a shared office and computer and photocopying facilities while in Sweden, funding for fieldwork in Tanzania.
For UDSM applicants, other terms are as per University of Dar es Salaam Postgraduate Regulations and Requirements.
Method of Application
The application should contain:
- An up-to-date curriculum vitæ
- A well elaborated research proposal containing the following section: (should not exceed 20 pages, font 12, ):
- Introduction/Background (including theoretical gap analysis)
- Research problem definition/research questions
- Literature Review (Focus on conceptual issues)
- Hypotheses (where applicable) or research questions
- Methodology (quantitative and/or qualitative approach)
- Expected results
- Work plan
