Scholarship Description
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation offers high school scholarships to learners who demonstrate the potential to excel academically, and who have the desire to fully engage in available opportunities. Scholarship recipients, known as Allan Gray Scholars, receive funding for high school tuition.
It is the Scholarship’s vision to develop a community of young entrepreneurially minded leaders so that Scholars will become Candidate Fellows (see Allan Gray Fellowship) or gain access to university.
The Scholarship was created to broaden the pool of Fellowship applications from those who are able to demonstrate financial need in Southern Africa. The Scholarship focuses on the development of intellectual imagination, encouragement of personal initiative, infusion of spirit of significance, courageous commitment and pursuit of excellence.
Eligibility
The Scholarship opportunity is available in the following three countries: South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland. Each country’s model differs according to the contextual needs.
1). SOUTH AFRICA:
This Scholarship opportunity in South Africa is available to learners entering high school, however learners can only apply when they are in Grade 6. An Allan Gray Scholarship will provide them with the opportunity to attend one of the Foundation’s partner Placement Schools in South Africa.
If you are a South African you can only apply when you are in Gr. 6. If you apply in Gr 5 or Gr.7 your application will not be accepted.
2). BOTSWANA:
The Scholarship Opportunity in Botswana searches for and selects Grade 12 learners who have applied for the Fellowship, but require a post matric qualification in order to gain access to a South African university. See Allan Gray Fellowship for more information.
3). SWAZILAND:
The Scholarship Opportunity in Swaziland searches for and selects Grade 12 learners whom have applied for the Fellowship and who require a post matric qualification in order to gain access to a South African university. See Allan Gray Fellowship for more information.
Please note:
If you are a Namibian you can only apply in Gr.7. If you apply any time before Gr.7, your application will not be accepted.
If you are from Botswana or Swaziland, you cannot apply for a full high school scholarship. The Scholarship in these countries are for post matric only. Botswana and Swaziland scholarships are specifically offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship and whom require a post matric qualification in order to gain access to a South African university.

Scholarship benefits
The Scholarship covers full high school tuition and boarding fees. In addition, Scholars will receive allowances to subsidise travel, stationery, prescribed books, toiletries, school uniforms, civilian clothing, pocket money and extra-murals. Scholars also have access to an entrepreneurial development programme to ensure their continued progress.
The programme recognises that Scholars are unique individuals from diverse backgrounds, who will therefore follow a distinct path. The Foundation supports Scholars to integrate smoothly into the new and challenging high school environment and are provided with leadership, and entrepreneurial development opportunities during their high school career.
Method of Application
Allan Gray Scholarship application is available to current Grade 6 learners wishing to enter high school in 2017. The Foundation uses a trusted model, which allows selection from a diverse pool of applicants. Successful applicants known as Allan Gray Scholars are recommended for placement at one of the Foundation's partner Placement Schools.

The Swaziland and Botswana Scholarship opportunities are available for learners wanting to study at a South African Universities through the Foundation Fellowship, and who need to do a post-matric qualification in order to qualify for entry. See Allan Gray Fellowship for deadline.

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is a non-profit organisation that was established in 2005 as an education and development catalyst to assist a generation of high growth entrepreneurial change agents to bring about job creation in Southern Africa. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation focuses on educational and experiential methods to harness the potential of bright young minds. The Foundation runs in SADC countries i.e. South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland. High school scholarships for Gr.8 to Gr.12 learners are offered in South Africa and Namibia. Post-Martic scholarships are offered in Botswana and Swaziland. Botswana and Swaziland scholarships are specifically offered to candidates that have applied for the Fellowship and whom require a post matric qualification in order to get access to a South African university.
