Scholarship Description
The Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to announce the Fulbright African Research Scholar Program (Fulbright ARSP) for African citizens and permanent residents.

The Fulbright ARSP Program offers two different types of grants: 1) Research Grants and; 2) Program and Curriculum Grants. The Research Grants provides an opportunity for senior academicians and scholars who already have their PhD degree (or equivalent) to conduct postdoctoral research and lecturing at U.S. universities and colleges. The Program and Curriculum Development grant enables university or academic institute members to undertake a planned program of reading and research.

Preference will be given to proposals that promote the spirit and goals of the Fulbright program – that is, to increase and enhance mutual understanding between the United States and African countries through interpersonal contact and the sharing of professional academic experience and expertise.

Eligibility
REQUIREMENTS:
  • An intended applicant must be a citizen of or a permanent resident of an African country, and should hold a valid passport issued from the country in which the application is made.
  • In addition, applicants must have at least three (3) years of post-doctoral degree training or teaching experience at the time of application.
The Fulbright program takes the issue of academic dishonesty (plagiarism) very seriously and will disqualify applications that violate academic integrity.

There are no restrictions as to age, gender, faculty rank, or academic discipline for either type of Fulbright ARSP grant. Preference will be given to individuals who have had no experience or only limited experience in the United States.

Scholars who have received a Fulbright grant for study, teaching, or research in the United States within the last five years are ineligible to apply. Please note that proposals involving doctoral dissertation research, postdoctoral research immediately following completion of a doctoral degree, or general professional travel, are ineligible. Proposals for clinical medical research involving physician training, patient care and contact cannot be approved under the Fulbright Program.

Selection criteria:
Research Grants: Awards of 3 to 9 months are offered for selected university faculty professionals to conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution. Preference will be given to individuals with a doctorate degree, at least three years of university teaching experience, a productive scholarly record, and whose projects relate directly to their ongoing teaching and/or research responsibilities.

Program and Curriculum Development Grants: Awards of 3 to 5 months are offered for qualified university faculty to conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution. Proposals should be linked to professional duties and demonstrate how the scholar will use the knowledge gained to develop new courses, curricula, or programs at the home institution.

HIV/AIDS: includes a special set of grants for scholars with proposals in HIV/AIDS-related research. Scholars in all academic disciplines are invited to formulate proposals with an HIV/AIDS focus. Candidates may apply either as research scholars or as program and curriculum development scholars.
