Scholarship Description
The California Environmental Health Association (CEHA) Awards Committee is tasked with overseeing the distribution of recognition awards and scholarships.

One of these awards, the Martin Smilo Undergraduate Scholarship, is available on an annual basis to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate student interested in pursuing a degree in the sciences.

The recipient will receive a cash gift of $2,500.00 upon proof of full-time enrollment in a 4 year accredited college or university the semester/quarter following receipt of the scholarship.

Eligibility
Any student who meets the following requirements is eligible:
  • Completion of a minimum of 48 semester units or equivalent, including a minimum of 12 semester units in science or equivalent, prior to application deadline
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale
  • Intention to pursue a degree and career in science, preference will be given to Environmental Health
  • Must be a permanent legal resident of California

Citizens of ANY country or of the USA who are permanent legal residents of California

California Environmental Health Association (CEHA), Los Angeles, California (CA), United States; AND
Any accredited 4 year college or university.

Undergraduate level degree courses in the sciences (with a preference for Environmental Health)

Method of Application
Applications are to be submitted to the CEHA Awards Committee, postmarked or electronically submitted no later than the deadline date below.

The following must be included in the application package:
  • Resume and cover letter which details the applicant’s scholastic, community, and extracurricular activities, work experience, educational goals and any experience in environmental health.
  • An essay written by the applicant, not to exceed three (3) double-spaced typed pages on one of the following subjects (applicants are encouraged to include personal experience, if applicable):
    1. The role of public health in a community.
    2. The role of a professional organization, such as CEHA, in promoting the interests of individuals in a profession.
    3. Choose one of the following topics and explain how it is a public health challenge for a developing country: Air Pollution, Food, Hazardous Materials, Land Use Issues, Lead, Sewage Disposal, Solid Waste Disposal, or Water.
  • A letter of recommendation from a college instructor/professor and a current or previous employer must be submitted before the application deadline.
  • Official college transcript of all completed college course work (Copies accepted provided one official sealed transcript is received).

The deadline to submit all completed applications or nominations is on or before February 14, 2014.

PLEASE NOTE:
The submitted essay becomes the property of the California Environmental Health Association. The essay may be published in a future issue of the California Journal of Environmental Health.

The scholarship money will not be awarded until verification of full-time enrollment in an accredited 4 year college or university is provided to the CEHA Treasurer.

The CEHA Awards Committee is tasked with overseeing the distribution of recognition awards and scholarships. For the most part, award recipients must be permanent residents of California to be eligible for awards and scholarships. The CEHA awards and scholarships available may be awarded at the CEHA Annual Education Symposium each Spring.

CEHA is a non-profit association committed to providing for the professional growth and development of the environmental health professional. We are primarily an organization of volunteers dedicated to the environmental health profession, which includes the protection of public health and the environment.
