Scholarship Description
The Wind Energy Division at the National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Risø DTU call for PhD scholarship in Integrated Wind Power Planning Tool.

DTU Wind Energy is a globally leading centre for wind energy with technical-scientific competences in the international front and with a unique integration of research, education and public/private sector consulting.

Eligibility
To be eligible the following must apply:
  • Candidates should have a master’s degree in meteorology, physics, mathematics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree.
  • Strong skills and a genuine interest in statistics and applied mathematics are essential.
  • Prior work experience within wind energy and/or numerical weather prediction models is an advantage but it is expected that the meteorological skills of the applicant will have to be enhanced as part of the project.
  • Previous experience with scientific programming and Linux systems as well as knowledge of coupled differential equations would be a plus. Applicants should have good analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards the research goals.

Doctoral level scholarship in Integrated Wind Power Planning Tool.

Currently, power system models only use output coarse resolution large-scale weather models. Because of their discretization and model stability restrains, output from these models have strong smoothing in the time domain. Mesoscale features such as the shape and location of the coastline, topography, and land use distribution are also smoothed by these models.

In contrast to weather models, high resolution mesoscale models provide improved temporal resolution and are able to simulate more accurately physical processes not well resolved by large-scale models, such as convective instability or the structure of the wind field across frontal zones. By taking those effects into account, the variability of the wind field is strongly enhanced, thus making the power system modelling more realistic.
