Scholarship Description
Launched on 4th March 2010, the Africa International Affairs Programme (AIAP) of the London School of Economics (LSE) IDEAS now invites applications for the new African Research Fellowship.

The new fellowship program will be for a period of up to four months during the 2011-12 academic year, and will be based at IDEAS at the LSE.

The African Research Fellowship is open to candidates from Africa (AU countries) and it is desirable that applicants are currently employed by a higher education institution, or working in a research capacity in Africa.

Eligibility
To be eligible:
  1. Applicants should be established African scholars in the field of international affairs and security studies sciences with experience of research on Africa.
  2. Applicants should hold a PhD or comparable qualifications and experience the fellowship is not intended for students registered for a degree or diploma, nor is it intended for senior academics.

Field of study
The Fellow will be expected to engage in research on a topic under one of the following themes:
  1. Africa’s role in global security
  2. Africa states and the SAARC region (includes India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) 
  3. African foreign and economic policies
Preference will be given to topics that focus on Africa and contemporary international relations and security concerns of Africa and the external powers.

The Fellow will be expected to finish a piece of research of publishable quality during their stay and make a
presentation at a seminar or lecture arranged by the African International Affairs Programme at LSE IDEAS.

Method of Application
Interested applicants should follow instructions as outlined below to apply. Please use A4-sized plain paper only. Please do not staple your application. Applications will not be accepted by fax under any circumstances. Application should include:
  • one page covering letter
  • curriculum vitae of no more than three pages
  • outline of proposed research of no more than four pages
  • names, addresses, and email contact details, of two referees familiar with their work, to be contacted by Professor Thandika Mkandawire, Chair of African Development at the LSE and the Chairman of the selection committee.
