Scholarship Description
The Columbia University-South Africa Training Programme for Research on AIDS-related Malignancies (CUSATPRAM) is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA.

Columbia University in New York City, USA, one of the top 10 universities in the world, offers four (4) unique, prestigious and challenging categories of training opportunities to promising researchers in the fields of basic science, epidemiology, biostatistics, social science and bio-ethics focusing on HIV/AIDS-related malignancies.

Eligibility
All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of South Africa.

All applicants must submit:

1. A letter with full contact information (name, home and work addresses, email, telephone numbers):
   a). Specifying the category of scholarship for which the applicant is applying
   b). Detailing the applicant’s research interests relevant to HIV/AIDS and cancer
2. Letters of recommendation with full contact information from two (2) individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s research experience, interest, and ability. At least one letter should be written by a supervisor or faculty advisor at the institution where the applicant is based.
3. A detailed curriculum vitae, including date of birth, birthplace and citizenship, all degrees/diplomas obtained, employment history, publications, presentations, and research support
4. One of the applicant’s peer-reviewed publications or first-authored conference presentations, if any

Eligible groups
Citizens of South Africa; and citizens of ANY other country who are permanent residents of South Africa

Participating Institutions
Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York City, USA. This program is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA.

Fields of study
Four categories of training opportunities in fields of basic science, epidemiology, biostatistics, social science and bio-ethics focusing on HIV/AIDS-related malignancies at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health:

1. MS degree in Cancer and/or HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, or Biostatistics*
2. MPH in Epidemiology or Biostatistics*
3. Short-term Intensive Training for mid-career faculty, etc., in clinical or basic research
4. Short-term Training for laboratory technicians, junior scientists, and doctoral students in the United States or South Africa to learn a specific technique, skill, or procedure

*Categories 1 and 2 require formal application to and acceptance in the relevant degree programme at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Sponsorship duration
The award will last up to 2 years as follows: a). MS degree in Cancer and/or HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, or Biostatistics: 1-2 years, starting September 2012); b). MPH in Epidemiology or Biostatistics: up to 2 years, starting September 2012.

Scholarship benefits
Four categories of training opportunities are offered to promising researchers. And all scholarships provide a stipend, tuition fees, prescribed textbooks and health insurance, and round-trip airfare for awardees traveling to the United States.

The categories are:

1. Postdoctoral Scholarship to earn an MS degree in Cancer and/or HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, or Biostatistics
2. Predoctoral Scholarship to earn an MPH in Epidemiology or Biostatistics
3. Short-term Intensive Training for mid-career faculty, etc., in clinical or basic research
4. Short-term Training for laboratory technicians, junior scientists, and doctoral students
