Scholarship Description
The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships to support the advancement of social science faculty toward completion of doctoral degrees and to promote next generation social science research in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The Social Science Research Council has announced fellowship for research in the field of social science in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda for the year 2011.
Eligibility
All applicants must be citizens of and reside in a sub-Saharan African country while holding a current faculty position at an accredited college or university in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
Applicants for any of the funding opportunities offered through this program must have a master’s degree and be working toward completion of the doctoral degree.
The program seeks to promote diversity and encourages women to apply.
To be eligible for the $15,000 dissertation research fellowship, applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken research of nine months or more.
To be eligible for the $15,000 dissertation completion fellowship, applicants must be in the final year of writing and have completed at least one dissertation chapter.

Number of awards
SSRC anticipates awarding approximately 45 fellowships in total for Research Fellowships AND approximately another 45 fellowships in total for Completion Fellowships each year (i.e total of 90 fellowships every year).
Scholarship benefits / Sponsorship duration
The doctoral dissertation research fellowship supports nine(9) - twelve(12) months dissertation research costs of up to $15,000USD on a topic related to peace, security, and development.
The doctoral dissertation completion fellowship supports a one-year leave from teaching responsibilities and a stipend up to $15,000USD to permit the completion of a dissertation that advances research on peace, security, and development topics.
Method of Application
All applications must be submitted using the online application portal on the official website via link below.
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance. Proposals should display thorough knowledge of the relevant social science literature that applicants will engage and the methodologies relevant to the project. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner. All proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.

Women are particularly encouraged to apply to this program as it seeks to promote diversity.
Fellows must be willing to attend two workshops sponsored by the SSRC each year that are intended to help early-career faculty produce scholarly publications.
