Scholarship Description
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is Austria's central funding organization for basic research.

The purpose of the FWF is to support the ongoing development of Austrian science and basic research at a high international level.

Starting with the coming call (call 2014, open from July 2013), only applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree no less than two and no more than nine years ago and starting with the call 2015 (open from July 2014) only applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree no less than two and no more than eight years ago will be eligible to apply.

Eligibility
Requirements include:
  • the doctoral degree must have been completed (award of certificate) no less than two years and no longer than ten years before the deadline for submission of applications. Extensions to this period may be allowed in case of eligible career breaks (see guidelines on official website).
  • exceptional international track record
  • scientific independence must be proven
  • in addition it is desirable that candidates have completed a research stay abroad of at least one year
  • candidates may not already be full professors (members of the "Professorenkurie")

Target group are outstanding young researchers of any discipline from ANY country

About Six (6) Awards every year

Sponsorship duration
Six (6) years, an interim review after 3 years decides on continuation

Scholarship benefits
Minimum EUR 800.000 up to maximum EUR 1.2 Mio.

Researchers should be given the long-term and extensive financial security to plan their research and to build up or consolidate their own research groups thereby qualifying themselves for senior scientific positions (especially as university professors within Austria or abroad).

PLEASE NOTE:
Allocation decisions are taken by the FWF Board based on recommendations of the International START-/Wittgenstein-Jury; recommendations are based on an international review process and a hearing; usually in June (it was June 14th - June 15th, 2013 for 2013 call). It is awarded by the Federal Minister for Science.
