Scholarship Description
The Yakubu Gowon Foundation (YGF) in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) offers National Essay Competition 2011 for all serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. Up to N1,250,000 cash award to be won.
The National essay competition for Nigerian graduates currently serving as NYSC members is announced as part of the activities to commemorate the 77th birthday and celebration of life and virtues of Nigeria's former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon. The former Head of State and Patron of Yakubu Gowon Foundation (YGF), will clock 77 years on October 19 2011. Ten (10) winners will be selected.
Essay Topic: My Dream for Nigeria
The essay competition is meant to encourage scholarship, rekindle the spirit of nationalism, deepen patriotism among Nigerian youths, foster national unity and provide an avenue for outstanding corps members to be rewarded for their writing skills and intellectual depth.
Eligibility
The contest is open to only serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in any part of the country. The restriction of entries to NYSC members is a tribute to the founding fathers of the scheme and an honor to all those who have passed through the scheme. YGF and NOA are hosting this competition in keeping to their various mandates of upholding worthy values and legacies of leadership in our nation, reorientation, mass mobilization, patriotism, peace, unity and service.
Essay Winners Awards
1st Place: N500,000.00; a winning recognition certificate and medal
2nd Place: N250,000.00; a winning recognition certificate and medal
3rd Place: N150,000.00; a winning recognition certificate and medal
Consolation: Seven (7) consolation prizes of N50,000.00 each
Essay Selection Criteria
Essay will be judged based on:
- Historical accuracy
- Clarity of thought
- Organization and proven topic
- Grammar and spelling
- Documentation
The essay must have four parts:
1. Title page
2. Essay pages
3. Bibliography (work Cited)
4. Contestants Biography
Submission Guideline
This essay contest requests that submission be made in hard copies and electronically. All contestants should ensure that hard copies reach the address below before the deadline. Electronic copies are to be sent on CD or as an attachment to an email message in MS doc, RTF or PDF.
Submission Deadline
Entries must be submitted to the address below after the endorsement of the state director of NYSC directly or through the contestant's state directorate by Monday 10th October 2011. Essay can be sent only after it has been endorsed.
