Scholarship Description
Novo Nordisk, a world leader in diabetes care and one of the top league pharmaceutical companies in terms of Research & Development (R&D) investments, offer the Novo Nordisk International PhD Fellowships to international researchers.

Fellows advance their scientific career and employment prospects by enrolling in the Novo Nordisk R&D Science, Talent, Attraction and Recruitment (STAR) programme.

Currently, Novo Nordisk co-finances around 80 PhD fellows in the R&D organisation. Some are Industrial PhD fellows who spend about 50% of their time at Novo Nordisk. Others are associated with PhD schools at Danish universities.

Novo Nordisk and the university jointly define the project. Project must be related to Novo Nordisk's R&D areas.

Eligibility
To be considered,
  • You must hold a master’s degree with a grade point average belonging to the top 20% of the grading scale at the university where your Master's degree was awarded. A certificate from the university of this is required, if you graduated from a non-Danish university. Danish graduates must satisfy the marks criteria for the Danish Industrial PhD programme (see below)
  • Fellows under the Danish Industrial PhD programme can be of any nationality. The university must be officially authorised in the country in question to conduct PhD programmes. If the host university is outside Denmark, a Danish university must be attached to the Industrial PhD project as a third party
  • Other PhD fellowships must be linked to a PhD school at a Danish university
  • PhD fellowships at foreign universities may be considered if co-funding from other sources can be provided
For Industrial PhD fellowships the requirements for marks are:
  • Weighted grade point average of 8.2 on the Danish grade scale for bachelor and master’s degrees
  • Grade point of 10 on the Danish grade scale for the master thesis.

Any project in any field is eligible provided that Novo Nordisk and the university jointly define the project, AND the project is related to Novo Nordisk's R&D areas.

Number of awards
About eighty (80) PhD fellows are sponsored every year

Sponsorship duration
Whole duration of programme. An Industrial PhD project is a three-year industrially focused PhD project where the student is hired by a company and enrolled at a university at the same time.

Scholarship benefits
The company receives a monthly wage subsidy of DKK 14,500 while the university has its expenses for supervising etc. covered. The PhD student works full time on the project and divides his or her time equally between the company and the university.

Method of Application
Expression of Interest:
If you want to be considered for a future STAR PhD Fellowship, you may submit an Expression of Interest here. E-mails with Expressions of Interest or applications will not be considered. You will be contacted if a matching opportunity is identified.

Applications can only be submitted by a Novo Nordisk scientist. You cannot apply for a fellowship directly. Based on your Expression of Interest you may be contacted by a Novo Nordisk scientist and asked to prepare a joint application. Your professor or others at your faculty may be of help to contact a relevant Novo Nordisk R&D scientist. Novo Nordisk does not have a repository of PhD projects.

DEADLINES:
There are 3 deadlines for applications per year for Novo Nordisk scientists to submit applications.

The application deadlines are continuously determined and announced at www.erhvervsphd.dk. Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (DASTI) must receive the application no later than 12 noon on the closing date for applications.
