Generations For Peace is an international non-governmental organisation founded in 2007 by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan and dedicated to the innovative and sustainable use of sport for peace building and development, and currently supporting activities in 47 countries and territories worldwide.
In order to serve and support the sport for peace and development community, Generations For Peace has established the Generations For Peace Institute. Located in Al Hussein Youth City in Amman, Jordan, the Institute is a centre for research, best practices and training, serving the wider sport for peace and development community.
Eligibility
You should be applying to start a new DPhil course, although in exceptional cases MPhil applicants may also be considered. This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma courses.
Applicants to the scholarship must demonstrate an intention to conduct research into sport for peace and development, as outlined above. The programme of study could be based in the Medical Sciences, Social Sciences or Humanities Divisions.

Selection Criteria:
Candidates are shortlisted by the University of Oxford and then reviewed by Generations For Peace. Scholarships are awarded based solely on academic merit and/or potential, to candidates who have successfully demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to improving the lives of others through their education, with particular reference to understanding conflict in communities.

NOTE: A key objective of the Institute is to expand its community of practice, establishing partnerships with universities, such as the University of Oxford, and providing scholarships and research grants to support study and research which contribute to the field of sport for peace and development. Research is therefore not limited to a focus on Generation For Peace’s own programmes, but may also relate to other sport for peace and development programmes, thereby making a broader contribution to the field.
Fields of study
DPhil degrees (applicants for MPhil courses may be considered in exceptional cases) involving research into sports and conflict resolution. The programme of study could be based in the Medical Sciences, Social Sciences or Humanities Divisions.
NOTE: The Generations For Peace Institute supports applied interdisciplinary research: to evaluate sport for peace and development programme impacts on both a macro and micro scale on individuals or communities; to inform the development of better practices in programme design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; and to explore new innovation and new approaches (including leveraging new technologies).
The research studies should be grounded in cutting edge academic theory, but directed towards practice and a contribution towards real impact. Research might examine the short term and/or long term impact of different types of programmes on an individual’s or community’s self-awareness, self-esteem, psychology, attitude and behaviour, and how these changes have affected situations of conflict and/or their physical, economic and/or social well-being, including broader community development issues such as gender equality, domestic violence, youth crime, mental health, inclusion of persons with various forms of disabilities etc.
The research should reflect the aspirations of Generations For Peace to make a practical difference to programme work on the ground, and endeavour to provide a useful contribution to the learning of practitioners. Where possible, it is also extremely important that opportunities should be taken during the course of the research to build local research capacity and learning amongst local practitioners, perhaps in partnership with a local tertiary education institution.

Scholarship benefits
The King Abdullah II of Jordan Generations For Peace Scholarship is to support a postgraduate student demonstrating exceptional academic merit and/or potential and intention to conduct research into sport for peace and development.
100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (rate to be confirmed). Some support may also be available for fieldwork expenses.
Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based upon satisfactory academic progress.
Method of Application
Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting King Abdullah II of Jordan Generations For Peace Scholarship in the Funding Section of the University's Graduate Application Form.
In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline (6 January 2012 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 20 January 2012 for all other subjects) and you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (17 March 2012). Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
If you do not meet the conditions outlined above, you will not be considered for the scholarship, even if you have selected Generations For Peace on the Graduate Application Form.
