Scholarship Description
The Peace Corps Nigeria Alumni Foundation (PCNAF) will award scholarships to promising female undergraduate college students of Nigerian heritage in the metropolitan Washington, DC area with a desire to contribute to the development and prosperity of Nigeria while pursuing their undergraduate studies.
The Young Women's Scholarship Program was created in an effort to help ease the financial burden of students with outstanding academic and leadership potential who are facing difficulties finding the money to stay in school because they have an international student visa. These students are not allowed to seek outside employment to finance their education.
The program provides financial support to young women entering their junior or senior year at a participating college or university.
Eligibility
Any female college student of Nigerian heritage is eligible to apply for a PCNAF Scholarship if she:
- Has an international student visa (F1)
- Is enrolled as a full time student at a participating institution
- Will begin her junior or senior year at the university in the fall of 2018, or will complete community college and enter a participating university as a full time student in the fall of 2018
- Has an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Has a documented need for financial assistance
Female citizens of Nigerian origin and/or heritage

Scholarship benefits
The program provides financial support of $2000 to young women entering their junior or senior year at a participating college or university.
Upon receiving their scholarships, the scholars will be expected to actively participate in PCNAF sponsored activities for at least one year. Activities will include: Participating in a leadership development mentoring program, AND Speaking to students at local schools about the basic education crisis in Nigeria (especially for girls) and the need for educational reform.
Method of Application
Application packages must include a completed scholarship application, an official academic transcript (most recent), the Financial Aid Worksheet, copy of the international student visa, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, a letter of recommendation from someone outside the educational institution, and responses (150-200 words) to each of the three essay questions. Note that you are required to submit requested documents, and also the Essay Topics to write on can be found on the scholarship Application Form.

The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. The stated mission of the Peace Corps includes providing technical assistance, helping people outside the United States to understand American culture, and helping Americans to understand the cultures of other countries.
Back in the 1960’s, thousands of Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV’s) served in Nigeria. For a while, in fact, the newly independent country was host to the single largest Peace Corps program. But then the Peace Corps had to withdraw while Nigeria suffered through years of civil war, military rule and mismanagement. It’s been more than forty years now since Peace Corps had a significant presence in Nigeria. Yet, many former volunteers (RPCV’s) cherish the memory of their service there and feel a desire to play a constructive role in the country’s development. That is what led a group of RPCV’s in the Washington, DC area to form the Peace Corps Nigeria Alumni Foundation (PCNAF) in 2000. They wanted to provide a vehicle for RPCVs, former Peace Corps staff, and other individuals and organizations interested in supporting development efforts in Nigeria, to make an on-going contribution.
