Scholarship Description
The Boren program focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.
Boren Scholarships are opportunities for undergraduate students with U.S. citizenship to acquire skills and experiences and study in regions of the world considered critical to U.S. interests (i.e. critical to the future security of the American nation) and underrepresented in study abroad.
The areas and regions include Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Eligibility
Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are:
- A U.S. citizen at the time of application
- A high school graduate, or have earned a GED
- Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
- Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.
Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.
As NSEP cannot list all countries, languages, and fields that are critical to U.S. national security, we are interested in applications that fall outside the preferences, if the candidate can make a compelling case that such study can contribute significantly to U.S. national security and the goals of the program.

Fields of study
Any field of study deemed critical to U.S. national security including: sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. Others may include science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, visit the official website via link below.
Sponsorship duration
Boren Scholarships promote long term linguistic and cultural immersion, and therefore study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study.
Summer-only programs must be eight (8) weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.
Scholarship benefits
Up to $20,000 is offered to undergraduate students to study outside the USA.
Award Amounts:
Maximum scholarship awards are:
- $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum)
- $10,000 for a semester
- $20,000 for a full academic year
All applications are online. The online application must be submitted, and the supplementary materials as requested on the official website (link to it is below) should be given to your Boren campus representative, by your on-campus deadline.
If you do not have a campus representative, the online application must be submitted, and all original supplementary materials must be submitted to the Institute of International Education (IIE) (address is on official website) by the application deadline. IIE cannot confirm receipt of materials, so campus representatives and applicants should send materials using a traceable method to ensure delivery.

The application deadline for 2016-17 is February 9, 2016. Please see your campus representative for your earlier on-campus deadline.

Boren Scholarship applicants will be notified of their status by mail in late April.
Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. In exchange, students give their commitment to seek work with the U.S. federal government, after graduation, for at least one year.
