Scholarship Description
Now in its nineteenth year, the Claude Leon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme in the Sciences is one of the principal programmes of the Claude Leon Foundation which is aimed to support both South African and foreign non-South African students.

The Trustees of the Foundation, through the Claude Leon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships, seek to upgrade research at South African universities in the faculties of Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences by making awards to both South African and foreign postdoctoral scientists, who would increase the volume and quality of research output, transfer technical skills, and generally enhance the research culture.

Suitably qualified candidates are invited by the foundation to apply.

Claude Leon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships

Eligibility
This fellowship is targeted at both South Africans and foreign nationals. The nationality of fellowships awarded is very diverse. Preference will be given to candidates who:
  • have received their doctoral degrees in the last five years; there may be exceptions for older candidates who bring special skills or experience.
  • are currently under-represented in South African Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences.
It is preferable, but not obligatory, that a candidate will undertake his/her postdoctoral research project in a department other than the one where his/her doctoral degree was obtained.

Selection criteria:
Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, taking the applicants’ academic achievements and potential as researchers into account.

The nationality of Fellowships awarded is very diverse. This is a deliberate intervention by the Claude Leon Foundation to bring international expertise and talent into South African research laboratories to exchange ideas and transfer expertise.

Participating Institutions
All South African universities and technikons. These are Useful Links to Universities and Institutions. The Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Witwatersrand and Pretoria are the largest beneficiaries so far.

Fields of study
Postdoctoral research in the faculties of Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences.

Number of awards
Currently accounts for between 15 to 20 percent of all Postdoctoral Fellowships in South Africa on an annual basis. In the last five years the Foundation has been offering 40 – 50 new fellowship awards per year. This means that on an annual basis the Foundation funds 80 - 90 fellows – second only in numbers to the government-funded National Research Foundation programme.

Sponsorship duration
The fellowship is awarded for two years, and will elapse if it is not taken up within 12 months of the offer

Scholarship benefits
The awards are currently valued at R235,000 per year; fellows can also apply for relocation costs from abroad, and support for international conference attendance. From January 2017, the value of the Fellowship will be R275,000 per year.

Interested applicants must download and complete the Postdoctoral Fellowship Application Form. All completed Application Forms should be sent to the university/institution at which the applicant has secured a Postdoctoral Position. Application forms are not accepted directly from individuals.

The Claude Leon Foundation is a South African charitable trust, resulting from a bequest by Claude Leon (1884-1972). The Foundation was registered as a charitable trust in 1963. The flagship educational initiative of the Claude Leon Foundation is the Postdoctoral Fellowship programme in the sciences. Since its inception until now (2016), the Foundation has spent well over R100 million on the Postdoctoral Fellowships programme and supported nearly 500 postdoctoral fellows.
