Scholarship Description
The University of Alberta offers many scholarship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students with outstanding academic potential, and one such award is the Maple Leaf Awards scholarship for international students studying in Canada.
The Maple Leaf Awards for international students comprise three scholarship programs as follows: University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship, the University of Alberta Maple Leaf First Year Excellence Scholarship, and the Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students.
If you are a non-Canadian citizen and not a Permanent Resident of Canada, but you are currently studying in Canada, then you may be eligible for one of these University of Alberta scholarships. Note that international undergraduate students are also eligible for the University's General Undergraduate Scholarships.

Eligibility
The criteria for eligibility varies depending on the particular Maple Leaf Award scholarship:

Conditions:
- Awarded to student(s) on Study Permit(s) with superior academic achievement entering the first year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta from a high school in Canada.
- Selection is based on academic standing, leadership qualities as demonstrated by involvement in extracurricular and community activities, and a counselor's letter of recommendation.
- Transfer students are not eligible for this scholarship.
Conditions:
- Awarded to student(s) on Study Permit(s) with superior academic achievement entering the first year of a University of Alberta undergraduate degree program from a school in Canada.
- Selection is based on high school academic standing.
Conditions:
- Awarded annually to students on study permit who are entering an undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta from a high school in Canada on the basis of top academic standing in grades 10, 11, and 12.

Number of awards
Up to 2 scholarship awards are granted under the University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship.
However, a variable number of awards are granted each year under both the University of Alberta Maple Leaf First Year Excellence Scholarship and the Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students
Sponsorship duration
All the Maple Leaf Award scholarships are awarded for the first year of a University of Alberta undergraduate degree program.
However, renewals for the remaining duration of undergraduate study are possible for both the University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship and the Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students if the student maintains certain conditions, as stipulated below:
- University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship: Renewal of funding for the second, third, and fourth years is contingent upon achieving a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a full normal course load at the University of Alberta, while studying on a Study Permit.
- Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students: Receipt of funding for the second, third, and fourth years is contingent upon achieving a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a full normal course load at the University of Alberta each year.
The University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship provides a funding worth $20,000 over four years (i.e. $5,000 per year).
Under both the University of Alberta Maple Leaf First Year Excellence Scholarship and the Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students, a variable amount of funding will be provided each year
Method of Application
International applicants are encouraged to apply for admission as early as possible. The earlier you apply, the faster your application will be processed and you will have more time to apply for scholarships (like the Maple Leaf Award Scholarships, the General Undergraduate Scholarships, and others), apply for housing, and get your study permit.
Application deadlines vary by program. For Fall term (September) entry—when most students begin studies—course admission deadlines can be as early as November 1 the previous year for some programs, or as late as March 1 for other course programs. Application deadlines for scholarships are different, and is as shown below for the Maple Leaf Awards.

For both the University of Alberta Maple Leaf Centenary Scholarship and the Scholastic Distinction (Entrance Citations) for Maple Leaf Students, you will need to apply online through the International Major Scholarships Bear Tracks under Undergraduate Awards.

For the University of Alberta Maple Leaf First Year Excellence Scholarship, you will be considered for this award after you have received admission to the University of Alberta (i.e. automatic consideration upon admission into the University of Alberta.)
