Guide to Scholarships for African students

There are many ways to fund your studies at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). In fact, aside the school itself, LSHTM students receive funding from more than 200 different sources, including charities, government agencies, companies and individual benefactors.

Scholarships cut across the various course levels, and are available for masters, research and short courses. This is a guide to scholarships and funding for the 2013/2014 academic session for Africans who have an interest in studying at LSHTM. It is important to note that this is not an exhaustive guide. You may also want to search through our scholarships for students to study in the UK.

  1. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (East Africa)
    The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP) seeks to build a new generation of social justice leaders worldwide. Ford Foundation International Fellows come from groups and communities that have traditionally lacked access to higher education, and are selected on the strength of their academic achievement, leadership, skills and social commitment.   2. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (Tanzania)
    IFP - Tanzania provides fellowships for post-graduate study to exceptional individuals with potential leadership qualities from marginalized groups or communities or civil societies in Tanzania who systematically lack access to education opportunities. IFP scholarships will enable them to access higher education at Masters and Doctorate degree levels, so that on their return, these individuals will come back and use their education to further development in their own communities and the nation, thus ultimately bringing about social and economic justice world wide.   3. International Students House (ISH) Welfare and Scholarships
    International Students House (ISH) and our sister charity, International Students Trust, provide a range of Residential Scholarships for students from the developing world. The Residential Scholarships for students from the developing world. The Residential Scholarship provides free accommodation at ISH for up to a year, and in exceptional circumstances up to three years.
    The majority of Scholarships are for Postgraduate courses, however we also grant Scholarships for Undergraduate Students. Nearly all of our Scholarships are co founded with the academic Institution who ensure a tutition fee waiver. All of our Scholarships are designed to give students from the developing world an opportunity to study in London and to acquire skills and training that will allow them, when they return home, to work and aid their country's development.

  4. African Development Bank and Government of Japan
    Description: Fellowships at Masters' level covering tuition fees and subsistence allowance.
    Eligibility: Applicants must be nationals of a regional member of the African Development Bank, be under the age of forty, hold a bachelors degree (with high honours) or its equivalent in a development related field and have at least two years' professional experience.

  5. The Beit Trust
    The Beit Trust offers annually a small number of Scholarships for postgraduate studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (the beneficial area). The duration of the Scholarships is normally for a maximum of three years at the discretion of Trustees. Scholarships are taken up at a University in the United Kingdom, Ireland or South Africa, for study in a subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area. All applicants except medical doctors must be under 30 years of age on 31 December of the year of application. Medical doctors must be under 35 years of age on that date and should have completed 18 months of internship and preferably a one-year rural posting in the relevant country. Prospective applicants must hold a degree of class 2.1, i.e. Merit or Distinction.
    Please note that The Beit Trust is constrained by Act of Parliament to sponsoring only students who are domiciled within the beneficial area (Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe).
    The extent of a Scholarship Grant is: A personal allowance, which is adjusted annually to the cost of living, is paid covering maintenance support; Other allowances are paid for arrival, IT support and printing of a thesis, and return to Africa; The University fees and cost of tuition are paid by the Trust; Economy Class air passages are met by the Trust for the initial journey to the place of study in the UK, and for the return passage at the end of the course.

    The Beit Memorial Fellowships for Medical Research (BMFMR) are highly prestigious three year research fellowships on offer to one applicant per year. These are handled by a separate secretariat. These fellowships are not handled by The Beit Trust, but, for further information e-mail: beit.fellowships@hammer.imm.ox.ac.uk.

  6. PhD Studentships in West Africa - The Gambia
    Eligibility: The MRC The Gambia invites applications, from African and UK citizens only, for its three full-time PhD studentships in any of the project areas outlined below:
    • The Automated Analysis of Flow Cytometry Data.
    • Understanding Differences between the Host Response to Mycobacterium Africanum and Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
    • Population Genetic Structure And Evolution Of Plasmodium Falciparum On a Transmission Gradient At The Extreme Of Its Endemic Distribution In West Africa.
    Description: The Studentships will start in October 2011, and will be full-time for three years, involving collaboration with MRC The Gambia and a UK institution. Full financial support will be provided, including a travel allowance.
