UTME 2013 results: Only 10 candidates score 300 and above...40,692 cancelled...etc

Barely seven days after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducted this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Registrar of the examination board, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, has announced the results.

He revealed that out of 1,644,110 candidates who sat for the 2013 UTME exam, only 10 scored 300 and above, while 628 others scored between 270 and 299. A further 127,017 candidates scored between 1-159 marks.

Analysing the results, he said 10 candidates scored 300 and above, 628 scored between 270 and 299, 33,115 scored between 250 and 269, while 704,622 scored between 200 and 249.

About 571,298 scored between 170 and 199; 103,489 scored between 160 and 169 while 127,017 scored less than 159. A total of 47,974 candidates were absent from the examination.

The analysis of the results released showed that 1,670,833 candidates applied to universities, 28,977 candidates applied to polytechnics, 28,445 candidates applied to colleges of education while only 25 candidates applied to innovate enterprises institutes.

40,692 results cancelled...80,419 withheld...possible disciplinary action on 12,110

Briefing newsmen at the board’s corporate headquarters, Bwari, Abuja, Ojerinde also said a total of 12,110 candidates’ results out of the total 1,644,110 who sat for the paper and pencil test and dual based test were being “withheld for a possible disciplinary action” due to examination malpractices.

He added that the results of another 68,309 candidates “from various centres are still undergoing further screening,” to ascertain their culpability.

This was also as he said that a total of 40,692 candidates’ results were invalid due to multiple shading or no shading at all. This literally translates into outright cancellations.

Exam fraud within and outside the UTME exam halls

Ojerinde, who displayed long sleeve shirts bearing ready made answers and worn by candidates to the examination centres, warned internet fraudsters who, according to him, had been telling candidates that they could upgrade their results in one form or the other.

His words: “Last year, we had cases of specially designed slippers otherwise tagged ‘Magic Slippers’ which desperate candidates used to perpetuate malpractices. This year witnessed a new turn as candidates wore long sleeves shirts that bore imprint of prepared answers. The vigilant eyes of my staff caught three of such T-shirts as exhibit.

“Information reaching us in JAMB shows that some internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other. This is pure deceit. Some even have fake answers on Facebook, calling on candidates to print them out. The public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data. Only the lazy and the gullible will fall victim.”

He disclosed that JAMB had made adequate arrangements for the checking of the results, which he said were already on the board’s website.

“The results can be checked...using the candidate’s registration numbers,” he said.

Giving an assurance that a computer based test will still hold on June 1 as scheduled, Ojerinde appealed to candidates to print fresh e-registration slips to further ascertain their centres.
