Scholarship Description
The Italian Government offers scholarships to both foreign citizens and Italian citizens resident abroad (IRE) for study at academic institutions within Italy. Applications for the 2018/2019 academic session has commenced.
The IRE scholarships are available for University degree courses (Undergraduate and Postgraduate), Advanced vocational training, art and music courses, Masters Degree courses (Levels I or II), Ph.D. Courses, Specialisation Schools, Research under academic supervision, Courses on Italian language and culture or courses for teachers of Italian as second language.
All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply. Applications for the 2018-2019 IRE Scholarships may be submitted by those who meet the following criteria on the expiry date of this call for applications.
Eligibility
To be eligible for study grants, students must have the following prerequisites:
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have the credentials requested for enrollment in the institution of their choice. All credentials and certificates of study must be submitted along with their Italian translation.
- Knowledge of the Italian language: Knowledge of the Italian language is indispensable. Applicants must possess a certificate of intermediate level in Italian (e.g. CILS B2, CELI 3, PLIDA B2 or INT.IT Roma Tre) or equivalent linguistic competence issued by a local organization or language school (e.g. Italian Cultural Institute, Dante Alighieri Society branch etc.). Applicants for enrolment in advanced vocational training, art and music courses or University courses held entirely in English, must have at least an A2 level of competence.
- Age Limits: Applicants who are under age (younger than 18) or older than 35 on the day of the deadline for the submission of the applications (see below) are not eligible. Their applications will not be considered.
EXCEPTION: This age limit does not apply to applicants who are Italian language teachers and actively engaged in teaching Italian. Teachers of Italian as second language are eligible until they are 45 y.o. (on the day of the deadline for the submission of the applications). - Restrictions: Students enrolled in a year exceeding the legal duration of the course of study (the so-called “fuori corso”) are not eligible for scholarships.
=> Citizens of several countries (EXCEPT Italy); AND
=> Italian citizens resident abroad only in the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Tunisia, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Participating Institution(s)
Scholarships are only for study and/or research projects at higher education Institutions within the Italian state education and research system (all State Institutions and research centers, or legally recognized by the competent State authority)
It is NOT allowed to apply for study/ research projects at: 1). foreign institutions (such as universities, academies, libraries, schools of any kind) even if they operate in Italy; and 2). Centers or research laboratories not legally recognized by the competent State authority.

Sponsorship duration
Awards can be of three, six or nine month duration. None are available for shorter periods of study. Only for Courses for teachers of Italian language the scholarship duration is one month
Bursary benefits
Normally, the scholarship holders are exempt from the payment of the university tuition fees, in accordance with existing regulations. However the Universities, as part of their autonomy, may not allow such exemption. Candidates are therefore recommended to contact the chosen Institution in order to be informed on eventual taxes or tuition fees.
For the sole period of the scholarships granted by the Italian Government, the scholarship-holders are covered by an insurance policy against illness and/or accident. Air tickets are not granted, except for Chilean citizens.

Method of Application
Applications are made online. All applicants must complete and submit the on-line application form by the stated deadline date.
Applicants for Italian government scholarships are requested to obtain country-specific information from the Italian diplomatic mission or Italian Cultural Institute of their country of origin, either in person or from the institutional websites. Information provided will include: applicant requirements, application deadlines, bursary types, number, description and monetary amount of bursaries, AND selection procedures.
Before submitting their applications prospective applicants for Italian bursaries must contact the university or institution in Italy where they intend to study and are advised to be as fully informed as possible about the institution and course of study.

All online applications must be submitted by 2pm (C.E.T) on 30th April 2018.
PLEASE NOTE:
Applicants will be notified via email of the reception of their applications. Successful recipients will be asked to immediately submit authenticated copies of their documents along with their official translations in Italian.
Scholarships are awarded for study and/or research programmes at public and legally accredited institutions. Scholarship recipients study at the Italian universities/institutions of their choice, based on the approval of the selection committee.
Pre-enrolment to the chosen Italian Institution will be done through the Italian Diplomatic Representatives in the student’s country of citizenship.
