Scholarship Description
The Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) hereby announces a call for several PhD places available for the academic year 2018-2019 for doctoral applicants.

The Scuola Normale Superiore PhD School offers FULLY-FUNDED PhD programs to both Italian citizens and students from outside Italy (international students). The eligible fields of study and research activities under this funding program are as listed below.

All eligible applicants fulfilling the required criteria are encouraged to apply for the 2018 Scuola Normale Superiore PhD Scholarships in Italy.

Eligibility
Applications for admission are invited from candidates who, irrespective of their citizenship, have an Italian laurea magistrale (MA/MS degree) or an equivalent degree from outside Italy, or who expect to have obtained the degree required for admission by October 31, 2018: failure to obtain the degree by this date will disqualify the candidate for admission.

Admission to the call is restricted to candidates who:
  1. were born after the 31st October 1988;
  2. have no past criminal charges against them resulting in a prison term of more than three years;
  3. have not been subject to the disciplinary measure of “expulsion” as specified in the didactic and internal regulations of the SNS;
  4. are not in possession of a research doctorate issued by an Italian university, and in any case have never benefited from a scholarship to attend a research doctorate course in Italy.

For each PhD course, one place is reserved for candidates who attained their MA/MS (or equivalent) degree in a non– Italian university.

The courses will be held in English; the PhD courses in “Cultures and societies of contemporary Europe”, “Literature, Art and History in Medieval and Modern Europe”, “Philosophy” and “Classics” are held both in English and Italian.

Number of awards
A total of 78 scholarship slots are available for 2018/2019 session

Sponsorship duration
The PhD courses have a duration of three years, save for those in “Methods and Models for Molecular Sciences”, “Nanosciences”, “Neurosciences” and “Political Sciences and sociology”, which last four years.

Scholarship benefits
For the academic year 2018-2019 the scholarship for the PhD course is equal to 15,012.00 euros including a lodging allowance. Students also have the right to free meals at the facilities of the Scuola Normale or at facilities with agreements with the SNS for the duration of the course, excluding the periods of academic holidays.

Successful candidates who are citizens of countries not belonging to the European Union will be reimbursed for the travelling expenses incurred for the start of the course to a maximum of 1,000.00 euros.

PhD students from countries not belonging to the European Union can request, within a year from the end of the course, reimbursement of expenses incurred for their return to their country of provenance, again up to a maximum of 1,000.00 euros. Those not completing the course because of forfeiture of the place can also apply for reimbursement providing at least a year has passed since the start of the course.

Method of Application
The application is based on qualifications and interviews. Candidates’ level of competence, talent, motivations and aptitudes to scientific research will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications and research project and an interview.

Candidates are admitted to the interview on the basis of an evaluation of their qualifications and of a research project written in Italian or in English.

DEADLINES:
Applications for admission to the selection process must be registered on-line by 23:59 CET of Wednesday 28 February 2018. All courses will start on 1 November 2018.

The on-line procedure will be activated at the section dedicated to the call on the SNS web site at the address http://phd.sns.it/en/. For each session, all applications received and registered on line after the stipulated date and time will be rejected whatever the cause of delay.

PLEASE NOTE:
The admission interviews can be done in Italian or English; the candidate’s level of competence in the language he is to be tested in must be stated in the application, with reference to the EUROPASS language grid.

The Scuola Normale Superiore is a public institution of higher education and research, and is the most prestigious university in Italy. The school was the brainchild of Napoleon in 1810. His aim was to select the best students and provide them with the most favourable conditions to develop their talents. The Academic Ranking of World Universities rates the School among the top five universities in the world and the first in Europe according to per capita performance. In addition to degree programs, in 1927 the Normale was the first Italian university to set up a PhD School.
