Scholarship Description
The University of Roehampton, London, is thankful for the generous funding from the Society of the Sacred Heart, of three fully-funded, full-time PhD studentships which are available for new overseas students, starting 1 October 2017.

The Roehampton University-Sacred Heart (RUSH) PhD Studentships are for the support of three candidates with a strong academic record and the potential for academic excellence at doctoral level.

Preference will be given to candidates from lower or middle income countries. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to contributing to their home community through their planned research project or area of study, and through their future career plans.

Eligibility
TARGET GROUP
This programme is open to all international students but preference will be given to candidates from lower or middle income countries (see World Bank list of lower or middle income countries.)

CRITERIA / REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the standard requirements for PhD study at Roehampton. The criteria are:
  • Academic excellence – record to date and potential
  • Nationality and domicile (candidates must declare all nationalities held; preference will be given to those who are solely citizens of and domiciled in lower-middle income countries*)
  • Commitment to contributing to the student’s home community
  • Fit of proposed project to the research environment at Roehampton and available supervisory expertise

Fields of study
PhD Programmes where the planned research project or area of study will contribute to candidate's home community, Suitable projects may be, for example, related to education, human rights, theology/philosophy, other topics relevant to justice, community service, environmental development.

This is only an indicative list; no disciplinary areas are excluded, and specific projects and intentions will be assessed in relation to the broad criterion of making a contribution to the student’s home community.

Three (3) awards will be granted

Sponsorship duration
The scholarships are for 3 years, subject to annual assessments of satisfactory progress.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship covers the fees at overseas rates, stipend at Research Council UK rates, currently £16,057 (tax-free), and contribution to research project costs.

Method of Application
Prior to submitting a full application, candidates should contact a potential academic supervisor at Roehampton to discuss their project ideas. Full application requirements include a completed PhD application form and other standard application documents; AND a covering letter outlining why the candidate is interested in studying for a PhD, why they are applying to Roehampton, how their project and future career plans will contribute to their home community, and confirming all nationalities held by the candidate (max. 500 words). Applications should be submitted by the deadline date below.
