Scholarship Description
The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) offers the Japan Foundation for United Nations University (JFUNU) Scholarship for outstanding postgraduate (MSc and PhD) applicants from developing countries wishing to study at the IAS.
The PhD programme in Sustainability Science aims to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science. The programme takes an innovative approach to sustainability, seeking to promote a better understanding of the issues by incorporating global change perspectives, specifically those related to climate change and biodiversity.
Only applicants that are accepted for enrolment into the UNU-IAS PhD in Sustainability Science programme can be considered as candidates for the JFUNU scholarship.
Eligibility
The award of the scholarship is based on application selection results.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must be from developing countries* who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
- Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa are NOT eligible for the scholarship.
- Applicants who want to pursue a second PhD degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants for the PhD in Sustainability Science are required to have met ALL of the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:
- A strong interest in sustainability studies;
- A demonstrated commitment to study and understand global issues;
- A completed Master’s degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-IAS research themes
OR
Two completed Master’s degrees, at least one of which must be in a discipline related to sustainability studies;
*Those who expect to receive a second Master’s degree before the entrance period – September 2017 – may also apply. - A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for at least one of the Master’s degrees earned; and
- English language proficiency
The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-IAS are:
- 600 on TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT) OR
- 100 on TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT) OR
- 7.0 on IELTS – Academic format

The PhD in Sustainability programme will equip graduates with comprehensive, multidisciplinary knowledge of sustainability problems, and deepen their understanding of the role of environmental sustainability in addressing current issues related to global change.
Through coursework and research, PhD students gain critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the technical literacy required to address sustainability problems.

Scholarship benefits
The JFUNU scholarship provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 36 months. However, travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student. The tuition fees are fully waived for the scholarship recipients.
*150,000 JPY is the average monthly living cost for an international student without dependents in Tokyo, although this amount may vary depending on the lifestyle of the student.

DEADLINES:
Application for the 2017 academic session open 1st December 2016. The deadline to apply for September 2017 entry is 28th April 2017 (Tokyo time).

After the application deadline, the process of reviewing applications and making admission decisions will take approximately 6-8 weeks. The successful applicants will be notified by email to the address provided on Application Form. Necessary documents for the admission procedure will be sent together with a letter of acceptance.
UNU-IAS may at any time require applicants to provide verification of the information and documents submitted as part of their application and/or additional information including, but not limited to, an interview.
The JFUNU scholarship is highly competitive and offered to a very small number of students who are granted admission to UNU-IAS. Thus, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for other funding opportunities from the government of their own country, private foundations, or international funding agencies.
