The Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) Foundation is calling for applications from Secondary Teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) across Nigeria who are interested in the upcoming WAAW STEM teacher training workshop.
WAAW Foundation understands that training STEM Teachers is a critical component in ensuring that African girls are trained in STEM. WAAW Foundation is therefore excited to announce that application is now open for the 2017 Free Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) teachers training workshop.
For STEM secondary school teachers and educators in Africa, the WAAW Foundation offers engaging, rigorous teacher professional development model which provides tools to empower teachers and their students and transform the classroom into a collaboration space where STEM content comes to life.
Eligibility
All secondary school teachers from the 36 states of Nigeria. This training is for all STEM Secondary Teachers across Nigeria

Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) Foundation; AND
All secondary schools in Nigeria
Fields of study
Subjects in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Fields.
Carefully selected participants will have the opportunity to learn Web Development, Renewable Energy systems such as solar and wind mill systems, ICT skills, Arduino, Integrative Teaching Methods, Curriculum Development Skills and also participate in team building exercises etc.
Number of awards
The one-week intensive programming training is set up to train 100 secondary school STEM teachers from the 36 states of Nigeria on digital literacy training
Sponsorship duration
The Training Programme will last between July 31st – August 4th, 2017
Scholarship benefits
At the end of the training, teachers would return to their schools to launch STEM tutoring and mentoring programs including integrating skills learnt in existing science clubs of their respective institution.
The Programme would include::
- hands-on learning away from the blackboard
- Africa-focused integrated curriculum that help teachers break down the rote memorization methodologies which are prevalent in the African educational system and which stifles creativity.
- Teachers are trained to develop cutting edge STEM curriculum for their classrooms using affordable locally available resources, train in digital literacy and employ technology and free online resources to enhance learning and engagement in their classrooms.
- Resources for continued learning for STEM teachers and facilitate communities and networks for peer support, mentoring and continued engagement.
- STEM competitions that motivate teachers to keep innovating in their classrooms.

STEM-oriented economies perform strongly on a number of economic indicators. Currently, there is a shortage of trained scientists in Africa. Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) is an organizations that is currently engaged in STEM Education activities and outreach across Sub-Saharan Africa.
