Scholarship description
Windle Trust International (WTI) awards scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate youths and refugees from areas of conflict, neglect or discrimination in Africa so as to study in Africa or the UK.
WTI aims to equip talented young Africans to meet the challenges of development in their own countries. The Trust’s activities include sponsoring study in schools, universities and colleges in Africa and in the United Kingdom, and intensive English programmes to enable refugees and others caught up in Africa’s conflicts to access training, employment and community leadership roles.
Through WTI scholarship programmes, the Trust challenges poverty and inequality by expanding access to and improving the quality of education and training, and by inspiring and supporting leadership for social justice. Its priority is communities affected by conflict, neglect or discrimination, with a particular emphasis on refugees.
Eligibility
GENERAL CRITERIA:
- Overall: Priority is given to applicants of particular merit taking into account academic ability, need, development impact, leadership potential and personal qualities.
- Status: Applicants should be refugees, internally displaced or be otherwise affected by conflict.
- Origin and location: Applicants should be from the countries of East, Central or the Horn of Africa and be resident in Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and South Sudan.
- Academic ability: Applicants must be academically qualified to undertake the proposed course with success, and they must meet the normal entry requirements.
- Language ability: Applicants must be capable of studying effectively in the language in which instruction will take place.
- Commitment and leadership: Applicants must demonstrate the potential, initiative, will and commitment to put what they learn into practice in future for the benefit of their wider community and region. A previous track record of community involvement will be considered favourably.
- Windle Trust is keen to encourage applications from women and individuals from other particularly disadvantaged groups. This includes those who are resident in the refugee camps and settlements, those who have lost close family members to war or conflict, as well as those who are particularly vulnerable such as people with disabilities and those who have themselves been victims of violence.
- Eligible applicants are welcomed from all religious backgrounds and ethnic groups..
- Competition for scholarships is high.

Preference is given to subjects that offer a high probability of future employment and are of direct value to development. However, the trustees do not exclude the support of students whose fields of study have a more general application to Africa’s needs.

- University of Leeds (1 award): Any course offered that is related to economic, social or technological development. Courses with very high fees e.g. MBA not included.
- University of Liverpool (2 awards): Any course offered at the Liverpool campus (not the London campus or medical courses taught by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine that is an independent Institute).
- University of Nottingham (3 awards): In collaboration with the University’s Developing Solutions Scholarships, for courses in the following faculties of Engineering, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, or Social Science.
- University of Reading (1 award): Any course at the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development.
- University of Warwick (2 awards): For the MA English Language Teaching.
- University of Westminster (2 awards): For any courses offered by the university.
The priority list is a pool of potential candidates for placement and has more candidates than places available in any one year (Usually, over 80 selected applicants per year).
Candidates who cannot be placed in available scholarship schemes, for one reason or another, remain on the priority list for a maximum of 3 years.
Scholarship benefits
A scholarship, in most cases, will cover full tuition fees, maintenance stipends, visa cost and return airfares.
Method of Application
Applications are assessed against basic Selection Criteria in the country of application. Those meeting the basic criteria are selected and processed. Candidates are thereafter advised to take the English language test (IELTS) and score at least 6.5 and not less than 6.0 in all components, as this is a usual admission requirement of UK Universities. A selection committee decides which candidates are placed on the “priority list” of selected students for placement on scholarships in the UK. Once a candidate is selected and on the Priority List, UK programme staff work intensively with the candidate and the universities to seek the most appropriate course of study.
There is no application fee. Submitting an Application Form does not in any way guarantee you an offer of a scholarship award. Please read the application details carefully before applying to Windle Trust. Before submitting your application for a scholarship to Windle you may independently apply for admission from any of the partner-universities or for admission and scholarships from other universities and funding institutions in the UK regardless of whether Windle selects you or not.

Confirmation of scholarships are given as early as possible, in order to give candidates time to apply for a visa and prepare for travel to the UK.
