Programme Description
Would you like to graduate from a renowned research school, located in one of the most beautiful old university towns in Europe? The International Max Planck Research School for Environmental, Cellular, and Molecular Microbiology in Marburg, Germany offers fellowships for a three-year structured PhD program.

Since 2003 the International Max Planck Research School for Environmental, Cellular and Molecular Microbiology (IMPRS-Mic) offers an International PhD programme with excellent research opportunities for outstanding young scientists from all over the world. This is in collaboration with Philipps-Universität Marburg (i.e. Philipps University of Marburg).

The Phd programme provides interdisciplinary training in modern microbiology, state-of-the-art research facilities, and mentoring by world class scientists. As an IMPRS student you will be given the freedom to embark on your scientific journey! We invite highly qualified and motivated scientists with a Master’s or Diploma degree to apply.

Eligibility
IMPRS-Mic is looking for young, motivated scientists with outstanding qualifications with a Master's (or equivalent) degree.

Our PhD programme is international and open to all students holding a Master of Science (MSc) degree, or equivalent, in biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, chemistry, physics or related fields. Applications will be considered even if the degree is not conferred until the programme starts in autumn of the respective year. Applicants holding an extended (at least 4-year) Bachelor degree may also qualify for the admission to the programme, but as a rule they need to attend additional courses at the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

The programme is taught in English, therefore all candidates need to demonstrate good working proficiency in English, and - unless they are native English speakers - provide evidence for this (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL). German is not a requirement for the programme, but German language classes are offered to students from abroad.

Selection criteria:
Students of the school are selected in a competitive selection procedure once per year.

Eligible groups
Citizens of ANY country worldwide

Participating Institutions
The International Max Planck Research School for Environmental, Cellular and Molecular Microbiology (IMPRS-Mic); Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology; Marburg, Germany.

Fields of study
PhD research in different branches of microbiology, including molecular and cellular microbiology, genomics, metabolism, host-pathogen interactions, microbial ecology, and systems and synthetic microbiology. Students broaden their individual PhD projects by joint seminars, lectures, workshops, international research conferences, and retreats. The program is taught in English.

Program duration
Fellowship is 3 Years

Program benefits
There is no tuition fee for the IMPRS Marburg. The only fee required is the bi-annual semester fee at the Philipps-Universität, which amounts to approximately 300 Euros. The semester fee includes the so-called Semester ticket, which entitles students to use public transportation (including local train service) free of charge.

Students admitted to the school will be supported by a three-year contract, based on the Collective Wage Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Doctoral students receive compensation corresponding to 50 percent of Pay Group 13 of TVöD (maximum level 2); this is currently just under 2,000 Euros in gross terms. In addition, there is a special annual bonus paid. Included in this contract is coverage by the public German health insurance system.

The three-year PhD programme aims to equip students with first class education through an individually tailored curriculum, accompanied by joint seminars and colloquia, workshops and courses, and scientific retreats. Important aims of this curriculum are to provide different perspectives on the microbiology research and to introduce a wide range of techniques that can be applied in microbiology, as well as to foster interactions among students.

Method of Application
We are only accepting applications through our online application system, which will open in December. Please do not send any application by regular mail or email, as they will be rejected. In addition, we can only consider fully completed applications, including all requested documents and supplied by letters of recommendation. The application form needs to be completed exclusively in English. In addition to the application form, we require several documents that need to be uploaded. Documents in languages other than English or German should be submitted with a certified English translation.
